Boracay has been known as one of the best tourist spots here in the Philippines for its fine white sand and stunning beaches. In 2014, it was even at the top of the Best Islands in the world.
As an in-demand tourist destination, several businesses have been established in the island such as resorts, hotels, restaurants, bars, etc.
However, President Rodrigo Duterte slams Boracay and said that it has become a "cesspool."
The beautiful white-sand island is drowning in feces and may need to be shut down its operation to protect the health of millions of visitors.
The President warned the establishements in the area to clean up or he would ban tourism there.
He said in an interview:
"I will close Boracay. Boracay is a cesspool. Now, during the days when I was there, yung basura was just 20 meters away from the beach."
"But you go into the water, it's smelly. Smell of what? Sh**. Kasi lahat doon, ang palabas nila, sa Boracay. It's destroying the environment or the Republic of the Philippines and creating a disaster coming."
Ricky Alegre, Department spokes man said that a number of establishments drained their sewage directly into the sea. There are even certain areas where some establishments have illegally tapped their sewage line into the water line.
According to news reports, President Duterte has ordered Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu to clean up Boracay in six months.
He said: "I will give you six months. Clean the g*dd*mn thing."
The tourist destination draws more than 2 million tourists every year. And the tourism industry there generates P56 billion in annual revenue.
However, the rapid growth in population and business activity have caused the problems of the sewerage system of the island.
President Duterte said that if the sewerage and sanitation issues will not be resolved. There will be no more foreigners that will go there.
