Hiccups can suddenly occur and go away quickly. But sometimes, frequent hiccuping can be very disturbing. This condition happens when the diaphragm and voice box contracts blocking the flow of air.
Most often, hiccups occur after drinking carbonated drinks, eating quickly, or swallowing air while eating. They can happen for a few minutes, but some long-term hiccups can last for hours.
Here are some effective ways to relieve the uncomfortable feeling of having a hiccup:
1. Plug your ears
Put your fingers in your ear opening for about 20-30 seconds. This will send a relax signal to your diaphragm.
2. Hold your breath
Holding your breath for few seconds is an age-old remedy for hiccups. Because the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream increases, thus distracting the mind and the hiccups will go away. Take a deep breath and hold it as long as you can. Exhale slowly in a controlled manner. Repeat until the hiccups go away.
3. Sip through a straw
Sipping water through a straw can help relax the nerves which causes hiccups. This method works after taking few gulps of water. Repeat the process if necessary.
4. Breathe through a paper bag
This method increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood, making the diaphragm contract more deeply in order to bring in more oxygen. This remedy is proven to help stop hiccups. Press a small paper bag around your mouth. Breathe in slowly and deeply into it. Repeat several times.
5. Drink cold water
The moment you felt your hiccups, drink cold water right away to make it go away quickly. This will shock your system and will cause distraction. You can add honey with a glass of cold water to remove your hiccups immediately. Or you can gargle cold water for one minute. Repeat process if necessary.
